Do we just like The Odyssey more because it's a better story? If you don't know, Homer's The Odyssey is a direct sequel and Virgil's Aenied tells another part of the story after The Iliad ends. Besides the Odyssey and the Iliad, he also completed a translation of Virgil's Aeneid — which I have to catch up on. I can't recommend this translation. Odysseus is pretty bad-ass, but my favorite character in The Iliad is Hector. It is what fired my imagination for swords and sorcery books and Dungeons and Dragons. Please help Also, should I read the Iliad first? If you've never read the Iliad, it truly is one of the greatest works of literature. I first read the Iliad and the Odyssey in the clasical verse translation by Alexander Pope. Plus I love the Greek and Roman gods. I remember getting a good grade for comparing the 'cast' of The Iliad with the cast of M*A*S*H (Hawkeye as Achilles, etc.). They form I recently came across the Robert Fagles translation and it strikes a good balance between the original poetic form and being understandable. I have taught both The Odyssey and The Iliad, and I agree with you about Agamemnon. The Iliad is still hard to follow, at least for me, but Fagles made it a thrilling pleasure.
